Description

Nature certainly handed astrophotographers the perfect Christmas Card! This is the closest conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in 400 years, and there will not be another conjunction this close for another 800 years.

For this very special Christmas card, my goal was to capture the experience of seeing the conjunction from the southern Arizona desert as well as the view through a telescope. This image was logistically challenging as I had one color CMOS camera for both (Canon 6d). I started with the landscape image and once satisfied moved the camera to my refractor already setup and tracking Jupiter. I got the final data I needed just as the pair passed behind the cactus in the image.

Merry Christmas / Happy Winter Solstice!
